Once again, rather than integrating Afghan poppy farmers into the world’s legal trade in opiates, we are proposing to pay them either to grow nothing or to grow nothing like the profits they get from opium and heroin. It’s a strategy that has failed miserably for going on 30 years, under both the Soviets and NATO. There simply aren’t enough troops to police the drug trade, even if there was local cooperation.
Gorilla says: “We ought to get off the drugs and high on Afghan farmers working to supply the world with painkillers.”
