Equal Justice Under The Law

Monday, October 12th, 2009

That is what the march on Washington by the LBGT community is all about.

Will it garner the same breathless mainstream media coverage of the far smaller tea bag events, not being organized by corporate interests tied to the Know Nothing Party?

Will there be a sense in Washington’s power corridors that doing the right thing by gays and lesbians is the moral equivalent of what was done for blacks in civil rights legislation (the irony of course being that many blacks are hostile to gays)?

Gorilla offers an expansive prediction: “Don’t hold your breath, but change will come and be welcomed sooner than we expect!”

TGIF And Predictions

Friday, October 9th, 2009

These were the events of importance in Gorilla’s world this week:

*The rethink about Afghanistan goes on. The Administration is caught between a rock (Afghanistan is sinking back into civil war) and a hard place (the terrorists we want to stop aren’t in Afghanistan, they’re in Pakistan and we can’t just go get ‘em). Gorilla believes there will be a few more troops announced, so as to quiet the Know Nothing Party, but that we’ll be on the road to withdrawl by the end of 2010.

*The US economy remains stalled. Many believe the bottom has been hit, but unemployment remains high (and will likely rise), the housing crash goes on (a wave of foreclosures in both residential and CRE is coming), and the need for lots more stimulus, particularly an extension of benefits and aid to the states, remains acute. Gorilla thinks our leaders are pissing into the wind, but eventually they’ll get around to doing something useful in terms of direct stimulus (and wasteful in terms of more tax cuts) before the year is out.

*The UN’s climate change talks are stalled. The US is not really serious about climate change. Beyond the rhetoric, there just aren’t the votes in Congress for a carbon tax, which would be the quickest way to reduce global warming and encourage alternative technologies. This also benefits our fellow polluters in China and the EU, since they don’t have to do anything serious until we do. Gorilla suggests that even cap and trade is a political non-starter and nothing much will be done on the issue over the next 12-18 months.

*Health care reform moves slowly but surely to the end game. The newest gimmick, an opt-out for states from a national public insurance option, may finally get something passed, but the fact remains that these plans do not cover all Americans and do nothing very much about containing the power and expense of insurance companies, doctors, and Big Pharma. Gorilla says there’ll be a bill, with some kind of phony public option, and we’ll really get around to doing something more serious about health care in 2015-20.

*Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. It’s a good thing for America, although the Know Nothing Party will no doubt experience apoplexy. Gorilla believes the neocon era of unilateralism, fear and greed is drawing to a close, but is not certain that peace per se will be the replacement; it’s a complicated world.

No News Is No News

Friday, October 9th, 2009

The Fed’s not going to be doing anything about interest rates for a while, because the economy is nowhere near recovery, let along robust growth.

This has been obvious for some time, but the 24-hour news cycle seems to want the Fed to start getting tough, as do some Fed governors.

So long as the bad assets remain undisclosed, foreclosures keep rising, and house prices keep falling, there’s not much to discuss.

Gorilla observes: “Reverse repos will come, but we’re still in repose today!”

Peshawar’s A Mesh Of War

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Another day, another bombing in Pakistan.

Peace prizes won’t settle what is clearly an existential battle between Islamic extremists and the Pakistani government.

One difficulty among many in this conflict is being certain which side the Pakistani government is on. They’ve decided to take on the militants up to a point, while portions of their army and intelligence services haven’t broken ties with the militants.

Unless Pakistan gets serious about taking over their own border provinces, and so far the jury’s still out on how serious they are, there’s little chance that Afghanistan will be stabilized or the al-Qaeda leadership captured in Pakistan.

Gorilla thinks: “A rethink is fine, but you’ve got to see the forest for the trees before you chop any more down!”

Prizing

Friday, October 9th, 2009

President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, which is remarkable.

It’s remarkable as a word of thanks from the rest of the world. America is no longer perceived as a unilateralist and lawless nation driven only by fear.

It’s remarkable because Obama actually has done very little to achieve peace, beyond making a few eloquent speeches.

It’s remarkable to see the return of some hope to the world’s dialogues.

Gorilla says: “It’s remarkable that America can still be seen positively after the last 8 years of garbage!”

Dollar Days

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Well, the almighty dollar’s been sliding, which is of course very good news for the US economy.

Trade deficit comes down, exports go up, more jobs for America!!!

But the Know Nothing Party is worried, as usual about nothing at all, so how is the world reacting?

The foreigners are intervening to prop up the dollar. Seems their overvalued exchange rates don’t look too good!

Gorilla thinks: “Greenback fever, catch it if you can!!!”

Only 25 Million To Go

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Huzzah, the Senate Finance health care reform bill gets a good score from CBO

And 25 million Americans would remain uninsured.

And there’s no public insurance option.

And it keeps the stupid link between employment and health insurance.

And it doesn’t require all businesses to participate.

And it doesn’t include higher payments to doctors under Medicare, or a trigger that would stop a 15% reduction down the road in government funding to insure the poor.

In other words, it’s not reform, it’s not health care for all, it’s what happens when an amoral Congress congratulates itself for keeping 25 million Americans uninsured and costs down over the next 10 years by spending the equivalent of 18 months of the Pentagon’s current budget.

Gorilla says: “You can call it sausage making, better hope you don’t get trichinosis!”

Relaunching A Gasless Bag

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

George Mitchell is back, trying for an “early relaunch” of Middle East peace talks.

The Israelis have already told him they have no interest in peace, while the UN report on Gaza has weakened the position of Palestinian President Abbas and strengthened the split with Hamas.

It’s hard to understand why the Administration thinks this is a priority. There aren’t serious negotiating partners on the Palestinian side, and we are unwilling to use our leverage over the Israelis.

Gorilla thinks: “It’s kind of like the Hindenburg, but without the humanity!”

The Other War In Kabul

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

While we’re trying to figure out what comes next, Pakistan and India seem to be continuing along without us.

We don’t know who’s responsible for the latest bombing of the Indian Embassy in Kabul, but it demonstrates just how little control the Afghan government has, how little the fight against al-Qaeda has achieved, and how little the larger regional security issues have been addressed.

Gorilla says: “Maybe it’s time to start worrying about the guys who actually have nuclear weapons!”

A No For Silvio

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi lost in the Italian Supreme Court today: he no longer has immunity from prosecution while in office.

Sensibly, the court decided that no man was above the law. One wonders when that principle will again apply here in the good old USA.

With allegations of hiring prostitutes, bribery, and various trials before him, will Berlusconi be able to stay in office?

Gorilla answers: “Probably, the Italians loved Pagliacci and they love this clown, too!”
