La Bouilloire Est Noire

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Mais oui, there’s almost nothing as amusing as listening to a French President lecturing the United States about protectionism!

Angry at what he saw as the Pentagon rigging a tanker aircraft deal in favor of the US supplier Boeing, and yes, they certainly did so at the behest of the US Congress, M. Sarkozy puts it: “In life there is what you say and then there is what you do.”

Of course, if it’s a European company trying to compete in France against the French electric company, you can bet your last freedom fry that M. Sarkozy will say: “Non!”

Protectionism, whether of the professional classes by the United States or of the farming classes by the US and the EU, is a fact of life.

Despite what the Know Nothing Party may believe, there’s no such thing as free trade.

Fantasy At The World’s Favorite Airline

Friday, March 12th, 2010

British Airways, the only airline ever to lose Gorilla’s luggage (not once, but twice), is facing a possible strike.

It’s astonishing, at a time of huge overcapacity and very little demand, that the BA unions think striking is a viable option.

Large pay cuts and staff reductions are the only way BA stays aloft.

The reality is that BA could go out of business tomorrow and no one would miss it.

It has been a money losing airline for years, neither competitive with other Euro legacy carriers or with the increasing numbers of discount airlines emerging throughout the world.

Gorilla says: “When they stop losing my luggage, I’ll start caring about BA’s survival!”

An Election That Doesn’t Matter

Friday, March 12th, 2010

In Iraq, the Shiites will win and the Sunnis will lose, that’s what happens when one group has 60% of the population.

The question is whether the Sunnis will work with the Shiites in governing Iraq going forward.

Whatever happens, the US is going.

After 8 years of a largely pointless war, we’ll get what we came for: access to vast oil resources.

There were no terrorists in Iraq until we went in, and there were no weapons of mass destruction when we got there; ever since, the rationale for the war keeps changing, but the pointlessness remains.

We won’t get democracy, and we may get civil war, but that’s been obvious to all but our leaders before we even invaded.

Gorilla says: “Hopefully, it won’t take another 8 years to get out of Afghanistan!”
