Another Insurgency Winning

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

This time, it’s Mexico, where Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the drug cartels have all the hallmarks of an “insurgency”.

What’s surprising is that she said this without irony!

Unlike our more recent losing efforts against insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan, we’ve been fighting and losing the war on drugs for 40 years.

It’s a tremendous waste of resources that has done nothing to change America’s insatiable appetite for drugs.

In Mexico, we’re providing all of the funding for both sides of the war, only the bad guys are getting far more money and guns from America than the good guys are.

The solution is as obvious now as it was in 1933: Prohibition doesn’t work, so it’s time to legalize, regulate, and control the distribution of all drugs.

Legalization and regulation will bring in lots of revenue, enable far more resources to be devoted to education and treatment, lower the crime rate in North America, and reduce illegal immigration by providing good jobs for Mexicans in Mexico.

It’s an absolute winner in public policy terms, but when it comes to Mexico politicians in this country always seem to prefer building fences, selling assault weapons, and promoting cheap and cowardly racism.

Quote Of The Day

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen: “We have to make sure that we get conditions right before we start this process because a transition to lead Afghan responsibility should be irreversible. We’ll not be in a position to take responsibility back afterwards. That would be a disaster.”

Gorilla translates: “The process we want to get right by leaving is the disaster we got by invading”.

And These Are Our Allies

Sri Lanka: going the way of Russia!

Despite the graveyards full of indispensible men and women, today’s politicians can’t resist staying on.

But they’ve got to maintain the pretense of democracy, just in case someone might notice!

So on come the constitutional amendments, the gerrymandering, the bribes, the stoking of fear, and whatever else Machiavelli didn’t mention.

The Subcontractors: They Screwed Up

BP again, taking the time honored path to avoid full responsibility!

“It was our rig, it was our spill, it was our fault!”

That’s what responsible non-cowards say.

Surely, you jest!

Sadly, this is the sort of thing we’ve come to expect in today’s America: the corporate interests who more or less run the country get the bad news out quickly, throw money at the problem, and pronounce themselves as pure as the driven slush!
