This time, it’s Mexico, where Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the drug cartels have all the hallmarks of an “insurgency”.
What’s surprising is that she said this without irony!
Unlike our more recent losing efforts against insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan, we’ve been fighting and losing the war on drugs for 40 years.
It’s a tremendous waste of resources that has done nothing to change America’s insatiable appetite for drugs.
In Mexico, we’re providing all of the funding for both sides of the war, only the bad guys are getting far more money and guns from America than the good guys are.
The solution is as obvious now as it was in 1933: Prohibition doesn’t work, so it’s time to legalize, regulate, and control the distribution of all drugs.
Legalization and regulation will bring in lots of revenue, enable far more resources to be devoted to education and treatment, lower the crime rate in North America, and reduce illegal immigration by providing good jobs for Mexicans in Mexico.
It’s an absolute winner in public policy terms, but when it comes to Mexico politicians in this country always seem to prefer building fences, selling assault weapons, and promoting cheap and cowardly racism.
