Nobody’s Going To War For Syria (Encore et Encore)

Saturday, June 30th, 2012

Who wants to go to war in Syria? Nobody!

So there’s another round of “deliberations” in which everyone stays well out of liberation.

Until the Syrian army decides to be done with Assad, the killing will continue.

Meanwhile, the Russians will block anything the “international community” may want to do, the Chinese aren’t any more enthusiastic, and the US wants to stay on the sidelines (with sanctions that don’t work, of course, there’s nothing like sanctions when you want to do nothing).

Can Kicking Ad Nauseum

Friday, June 29th, 2012

Another EU summit, another chance to kick the can down the road…

Nothing of substance was accomplished here, because there remains a refusal to understand that the problem is one of competitive balances, not sovereign debt.

Taking Spain off the hook for the debts of its banks may seem like progress, but Spain’s economy is uncompetitive and unemployment is 25%. Yet the beatings of austerity must continue!

Once again, the ECB must become the lender of last resort, cut interest rates to zero, pursue an inflation target of 5% until unemployment comes down, and encourage the Germans and other northern European countries to undertake significant stimulus (a couple of trillion, not a continent wide peanuts jobs program of 100 billion): all of this is necessary and none of it is being done.

Gorilla says: “3-2-1… yep sometime today markets will discover that this summit has failed like the previous 17!”

A Great Day For America

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Now, Mr. President, do a better job of explaining the damn healthcare future!

That’s what the Prez needs to do: a clear, simple explanation that all Americans now will have access to health care, regardless of their income, regardless of their pre-existing conditions, etc.

If he does that, and points out clearly that the other guys want to take it all away, people will see it’s a winner and he’ll be reelected easily (and Dems will do better, because the other guys don’t actually have a healthcare plan). The exchanges and the subsidies should do the rest, and we may eventually get to single payer.

This was a big loss for the GOP, although they get a chance to screw poor people via Medicaid on the state level.

For the poor, it will still depend on where you live and the states will race to the bottom for a while.

For everyone else, this is the biggest positive thing to happen in America since Medicare and the Voting Rights Act, a truly big deal!

Another Failure: Why Bother Having Summits At All?

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

The Germans dig their heels in, so this summit is already a failure, and the euro is doomed!

The markets and Euroland economies have spoken: unless disastrous austerity policies are ended, the ECB becomes lender of last resort while pursuing much higher inflation, and the northern Europeans don’t engage quickly in big-time stimulus (a couple of trillion is what’s needed), the Eurozone is finished. When everyone is begging you to borrow money at the lowest rates in decades, the lack of responsibility on the part of the Germans is both breathtaking and completely amoral.

Why Isn’t Bob Diamond In Jail?

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

A criminal conspiracy to fix a market, if that’s not a felony, then what’s the point of the rule of law?

Until governments begin to exert real control over the financial services industry, criminality in the service of risk taking will continue. We need much smaller banks, much greater transparency, and much greater efforts by regulators and central banks to prevent being captured by these con artists.

Here’s What We’ll Do, But What We Won’t Matters More

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

Another Euroland grand design that fails to recognize, let alone address, the problems that are about to destroy the Euro!

The problem is not about budget deficits or even sovereign debt: it’s about a lack of competitiveness between northern and southern Euroland.

After all, Spain, among others, ran surpluses prior to their housing bust, while the Germans and French both violated the budget/GDP ceiling when the Euro was launched.

What needs to be said is that the ECB will be the lender of last resort, that large scale stimulus will be undertaken in northern Euroland, and that inflation targets will be raised substantially until the disastrous level of unemployment is brought down.

None of this is being said, so it’s only a matter of time (less than 6 months) before the Euro unravels altogether.

Two Points Of Clarity

Monday, June 25th, 2012

Number One: If the Supreme Court strikes down the individual mandate in the healthcare bill, we will know that it is no longer an independent branch of government and health care will not be revisited seriously for another decade or more.

Number Two: If the Germans stand by once again and allow the market to tank 5-10% or more by their completely amoral irresponsibility, then the Eurozone will break up before the end of the year. It matters little whether the Greeks/Spanish stay or the Germans/Dutch go, but the current lunacy is completely unsustainable.

The Nest Improves But OSX Lion Is Still Not Good

Saturday, June 23rd, 2012

The Nest: doesn’t actually come on when the temp you set is less than the actual temp, doesn’t maintain WiFi connections, endless low battery, customer service that lies: it’s shit!

OSX Lion: A crashing machine, oh well, maybe it’s the Nvidious graphics card (not quite 3 years old): either way, it’s crap!

Update, Monday, June 25: Nest has managed to fix Gorilla’s Problems, so he’ll take the high road and say it was a miserable but ultimately resolved experience.

Veniality Is What Passes The Test: A Bozo Ottava Rima Song

Saturday, June 23rd, 2012

Say you were a liar and that was your best
You could serve customers with several lies
While working for Nest, and their lawyers distressed
By ordering up PACs with profits who tie
Neck wrung in America, some righteous quest
What we remember of foul Supreme Court cries
For what we once had, but apparently lost
On duck hunting trips, knowing who would be bossed.
