The Get Out Of Jail Free Card

Saturday, August 31st, 2013

Our President, having backed himself into a corner with his ridiculous Syria policy, now gets a reprieve: this Congress won’t vote for it, so, reluctantly, he’ll decide to do nothing…

And this was the correct decision in the first place, but nobody will remember that!

And this Presidency, except for the Executive Branch regs, and assuming the Dems don’t get the House back next year, has been over for at least 6 months, and nobody will remember that!

March Anniversary

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

This is still a very racist country, look at the Know Nothing Party!, and Dr. King was a real revolutionary!!!

But for a moment in ’63, he gave the country hope, not of changing for the better, but of grassroots organizing, campaigning, and demanding, qualities that need to be emphasized every day of every week.

Gorilla says: “When you aren’t frightened of nonwhite people, and see them as neighbors and friends, and try to address at ground level the fundamental inequality that is the accident of birth, then that’s good, but we sure as hell aren’t there yet, you Supreme Court assholes!”

A Moral Obscenity With No National Interest At Stake

Monday, August 26th, 2013

Remind you of anything other than Another Round Of Empty Posturing?

Of course the Syrian government is using chemical weapons on their own people.

Why this is morally more obscene than say using saturation bombing and mortar shells on your own people is a great mystery, or hacking to death a few million of your fellow citizens with machetes, or tossing aside an elected government in favor of a military dictatorship with full American support!

Of course we have zero national interest at stake in Syria.

Unless we know precisely where Assad is (nope, the intelligence community has no idea, clearly), then there’s no point in bombing Syria and killing yet more Syrians.

Syria is Lebanon on a larger scale, or it’s Yugoslavia, a land with plenty of bad guys and no peaceful resolution without a massive international force staying for decades.

Oh, and the Russians won’t ever agree to that, so all of the Administration’s outrage is at best pointless and at worst deeply cynical.

Gorilla says: “Oh well, empty posturing remains far better than yet another pointless war!”

Ten Issues Nobody Really Cares About

Wednesday, August 21st, 2013

1) Torture: Manning gets 35 years for leaking documents, while torture continues in Guantanamo and around the world.

2) Syria: Chemical weapons or not, nobody’s going to war for Syria.

3) Egypt: a failed state and a successful military dictatorship.

4) Middle East peace: a sham and a fraud, as it’s been most of the last 65 years.

5) The deficit and/or the debt: Both are falling, while those who claim to be worried are only worried about their taxes being raised.

6) Gun Control: puhleeze…

7) Immigration Reform: has never been a realistic possibility in this Congress.

8) Afghanistan and Pakistan: two failed states in a race to the Islamist bottom.

9) North Korea: Maybe the Chinese are slightly worried about massive refugee flows when the regime implodes, but otherwise there’s nothing there.

10) The “rebranding” of the Know Nothing Party: see Middle East peace.

Gorilla says: “All of these things distract us from the economy, which no one in DC cares about!”

A Big Story Getting No Attention

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013

Well, except in Japan, where it’s clear that there’s still no control over the radioactive leaks from Fukushima.

Gorilla says, “No, let’s not hear again how safe nuclear power can be, when this says it cannot be!”

Ex-Post Facto

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013

The Washington Post has been a crappy newspaper for more than 15 years.

Gorilla says: “It may be worth $250 million to a conman like Jeff Bezos, but to the rest of us it’s been worthless!”

Half-Hearted Irresponsibility

Friday, August 2nd, 2013

Japan keeps sending mixed messages:

1) The Bank of Japan promises quantitative easing until the inflation rate hits 2%.

2) The government of Japan promises extensive fiscal stimulus in line with QE.

3) The government then announces a very large sales tax hike, threatening economic growth.

Japan’s at least trying, whereas Europe and the US seemed paralyzed.

Unemployment is a disaster in the US (at the current rate of “job creation” it will only take another 7 years! to get back to full employment), and the Fed’s pronouncements lack clarity (are you or are you not committed to higher inflation until unemployment falls sufficiently? Then please say so, particularly when you’re missing the inflation target badly on the wrong side!) and in Europe they continue to await the arrival of the confidence fairy.

Gorilla says: “We need more irresponsibility and we need it now!!!”

Bipartisanship Equals Another Lousy Bill

Thursday, August 1st, 2013

This time for student loans, which prevents a temporary short-term doubling of the interest rate, but does nothing about the fundamental problem: getting the banks out of the business so students don’t start their working lives with heavy debt burdens.

The way to do this is to have the government make loans directly to students at government borrowing rates, which means around 1-2%. Eliminating the middle man means less corruption and fraud, and gives students a chance to pay the debt back in a reasonable period of time (say 30 years, the same as mortgages).

But that’s not something that can pass the Congress, which is wholly in hock to the bankers who made this mess possible.

Gorilla says: “Back to school to learn something about basic economics, leaders!!!”
