Celebrating A Decade Of Failure

Friday, September 9th, 2011

9/11 was the greatest national security failure in American history, a total failure of our leaders to protect this country, so there’s absolutely nothing to celebrate…

The past 10 years have seen the launching of 4 utterly pointless wars (Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Somalia), the further entrenchment of robber baron plutocrats, the further erosion of civil rights, and the worst economic performance since the Depression.

America did elect its first black President, which is certainly worth celebrating, but all he’s proven so far is that mediocrity is colorblind.

Gorilla says: “We need to learn something from our failure, not demonstrate how often we can repeat it!”

What Was 9/11?

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

Three things:

1) The greatest national security disaster in the history of the United States

2) A reminder of what can happen when religion-based extremism goes berserk.

3) A reaffirmation that a government which refuses to take responsibility for its actions is a government that can never be trusted.

What 9/11 should never become is an excuse:

* to wallow in national victimhood
* to promote racial bigotry and religious intolerance
* to engage in torture and suspend fundamental human rights
* to launch pointless wars of revenge based on lies and/or
* to indulge in cheap and cynical political opportunism.

Gorilla asks: “Which 9/11 are we remembering now?”

TGIF And Predictions

Friday, November 13th, 2009

These were the events that mattered in Gorilla’s world this week:

Afghanistan: A deal is in the works, despite all the posturing, or rather the indecision, about sending in more troops. There’s no public support within NATO for an endless occupation, so the window of opportunity (cut deal, train troops, peace with honor) is at most 18-24 months. Gorilla thinks we’ll be on the way out in the next 12 months.

The Asian Two Step: President Obama again pleads with the Chinese to let the yuan appreciate. The Chinese again make noises about protectionism and the dollar. Since both sides prefer this outcome, both will claim victory. Gorilla suggests the dollar will fall further and the yuan will begin to rise over the next 12 months.

Elections Do Not Peace Make: The Palestinians, yet again, cannot find a way to unify Hamas and Fatah, whose positions on peace are fundamentally opposed. So the election can will be kicked down the road a few months, sufficient to guarantee no progress for at least a year. Gorilla believes this is the outcome all sides want, so he’s not particularly worried about how unserious the Israelis and Palestinians decide to be.

Trying The Mastermind: The 9/11 mastermind, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, will be tried in the US after all. All the Guantanamo detainees could have been tried in the US and/or released by now, but politically it’s much better to continue cowering, increase middle class jobs programs like the Pentagon, and pretend that the fate of the civilized world depends on defeating a handful of fifth-rate terrorists who occasionally get lucky. Gorilla is certain Guantanamo will close in 2010, only 8 years behind schedule.

The Dollar Carry Trade Goes On: Will Ben Bernanke at last decide that bubbles are not the only thing America consistently produces? It’s a tricky question. Raising interest rates would show resolve, whatever that is, but not doing so demonstrates conclusively that big US commercial banks remain zombies. Gorilla foresees a few more years of deleveraging, living standards declining, and unemployment, sans another large stimulus package, won’t recover for a decade. Gorilla thinks the writing is on the wall, but the oracle of Maiden Lane isn’t interested in reading the message. Much better to be defending one’s turf near the barn door while the next horse bolts for greener pastures…

TGIF And Predictions

Friday, September 11th, 2009

This is what mattered in the world this week:

*President Obama gave a good speech about health care. Nothing much will change in terms of reform, because there aren’t enough votes for the public option and the Congress doesn’t really want to take on the medical industrial complex. Gorilla says a bill will be done by November, but window dressing and no competition will be the main features of what has been a gloriously wasted opportunity.

*Hamid Karzai has won the Afghan election, possibly on the back of massive fraud. This doesn’t matter since he’s the candidate the West wants to be President of Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Democratic Congressional voices are starting to question the need for more American troops. Gorilla believes we’ll be on our way out within a year.

*Iran continues to be an unresolved problem, having first refused to negotiate on the nuclear issue, then proposing to tie it to an overall Middle East settlement. It seems likely that the Russians were smuggling arms to Iran via the mystery ship, and it is clear there is no Russian support for further sanctions against Iran. Gorilla thinks we’ll be negotiating bilaterally with Iran and North Korea within 6-12 months.

*While happy talk continues in Movingforwardville about the end of the recession, there is very little evidence that things are getting better with the US economy. Unemployment continues to rise, median incomes are falling, many banks remain insolvent, the dollar is tanking again (although this is actually a good thing in terms of US exports), and Wall Street has started on the next round of bubble dancing. Gorilla believes there are more bad shoes to drop in the coming months, particularly from the financial service and housing industries, while the consumer will remain on the sidelines for another year.

*French President Sarkozy’s decision to levy a carbon tax marks the first semi-serious Western effort to deal with climate change. Alas, there’s no corresponding initiative being undertaken by larger polluting nations, either because they’re waiting for each other to make the first move or they lack the political support domestically to do anything serious. Gorilla foresees yet another G-20 summit of loftily vague promises and no real progress.

*8th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The greatest intelligence failure in American history continues. Gorilla suggests that not catching Osama bin Laden and his cohorts is more or less of a piece with not holding American governmental officials accountable for torture and the greatest economic disaster since the Depression. As we now know, Goingbackwardville doesn’t do accountability at all, but it does amorality very well.

Demoralized Amorality

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Whenever Gorilla hears the CIA’s being demoralized by the latest revelation of what the Agency’s really been up to, he wants to light a candle in the Church Of Church.

Think that sort of investigation would happen today?

Let’s see: Two of the three greatest intelligence failures in American history occurred in 2001-2003: 9/11 and WMD in Iraq.

For failing so spectacularly, the CIA Director got the Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian award.

Then his non-chagrined girls and boys moved on to torture, obstruction of justice, and extraordinary rendition.

The other big failure happened on 12/7/41, but the CIA wasn’t around, so no one but the American people were demoralized.
