Some Sense At Last

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Of course denying gays the right to serve in the military is a violation of their rights to free speech, due process and equal protection!

Just as denying gays the right to marry is also a violation of their rights to free speech, due process, and equal protection…

So, by the way, is extraordinary rendition and torture, whether of gays or straights, regardless of whether “state secrets” are used to block due process and equal protection!

One day, future Americans will hopefully laugh at the combination of bigotry, racism, and religion-fueled hatred that currently passes for civil discourse in our country!

Baby Steps In Second Class

Friday, April 16th, 2010

The Administration has ordered hospitals receiving federal funds to permit gay partners to visit their sick relatives and grants them power of attorney on medical decisions.

This is a welcome step, but it’s hardly equal justice under the law.

For that, the courts will be necessary and the Defense of Marriage Act will need to be overruled.

Discrimination is discrimination, and our national leaders aren’t exactly profiles in courage on the issue.

It’s all been “go slow, speak soft”, just as it was for blacks in the civil rights days and for women all the time.

Having second class citizens should be totally unacceptable to every American, but we’re a long way from the finish line.

The Usual Ass Called Army Brass

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Here we go again, the Army chief of staff says he’s not keen on gays in the military, and needs more time to figure out what to do.

Meanwhile, a couple of interesting reports.

One, of military forces in 25 countries that allow gays to serve, says that a rapid change in policy is the easiest way to integrate gays, and that there is no evidence whatever that having openly gay people in the military had a negative impact on readiness, morale, or recruitment.

Another says that America’s female soldiers are far likelier to be raped and sexually harassed than they are to die while serving in Iraq.

It’s difficult to understand why the Army’s being so ridiculous, perhaps it’s to distract attention from losing two wars.

As Gorilla says: “Welcome to the Pentagon: don’t ask us how we’re doing and we won’t tell you!”

Fighting Terror With Separate Beds?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Too busy not catching terrorists and losing two wars, the Pentagon is now worried that it may “lose focus” if gays unreservedly are to be allowed to serve in the military.

What’s the problem? Apparently, our macho boys will have difficulty accepting there are gay boys living, breathing and fighting with them. There’s talk of separate housing accommodations, but so far the Pentagon says planning for this hasn’t extended to separate shower facilities.

On the other hand, our macho girls will be left on their own against lesbians, pretty much what they would expect from a misogynistic workplace full of heterosexual harassment and heterosexual assaults.

One wonders which planet our boys and girls were living on prior to joining the Spaceship Pentagon.

There’s not a single community anywhere in the United States that does not include homosexual people.

And a significant number of our politicians certainly think that discrimination beats tolerance when it comes to winning votes. Worked against blacks, worked against women, will work again.

Progress through separate development? Where have we heard that one before? Why yes, it was the official slogan of the apartheid regime in South Africa during the 60s and 70s!
