A Pointless, Complete and Total Failure

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

Afghanistan, of course, where the Pentagon is not winning and has not succeeded in training Afghan forces to take over the country’s security.

Why we need to spend another 3 years on this debacle is beyond understanding.

There will certainly be a civil war once we depart.

We can try for a negotiated settlement in advance, but it appears that everyone in the country and in the region is waiting for us to leave before getting serious (about either war or peace).

There needs to be a complete overhaul of the Pentagon, reducing the budget substantially and addressing genuine national security threats (of which there are very few).

DOD is wasting trillions of dollars on an outdated strategy (whose air forces and navies are we going to fight? whose army hasn’t a clue about counterinsurgency? whose nukes must we spend billions defending against?), while being unable to defeat a lightly armed, fifth-rate group of fanatics who pose no threat whatever to the United States.

More Pentagon Foolishness

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

China: a “modern military” by 2020, sayeth the Pentagon!!!

And of course, they’re spending roughly 10% of what we waste on defense to achieve this modernity, so we must spend even more!!!

It’s utter nonsense of the first order. We could reduce the Defense Department’s budget by 50% and still be spending far more than anyone else in the world.

Unprofessional Disloyalty Is A Fireable Offense

Friday, June 24th, 2011

And not just for baseball managers:

The President should fire both Admiral Mullen and General Petraeus

Afghanistan has been a tremendous Pentagon failure. 10 years on, there’s no end in sight.

Our trillion dollar military has been held to a draw by a few thousand fifth-rate Taliban fighters. It’s a national disgrace for which heads should roll.

And to have failures like Mullen and Petraeus say that the President’s timetable for withdrawal (which should have happened already) is “risky” is the height of disloyalty.

Gorilla says: “Worthless, unprofessional and disloyal generals and admirals deserve nothing but contempt!”

What’s A Warrior Scholar?

Someone who’s intimately involved in losing 3 pointless wars, none of which so far has caused anyone in authority to learn anything, and of course that means promotion!

The Best Fix Wins

Friday, February 25th, 2011

No surprise that Boeing won the tanker contract, it’s been clear since the uproar in Congress when EADS originally won that the Pentagon would bend over backwards to get the right result.

What’s less clear is why there’s a need for tankers at all.

Gorilla asks: “Whose air force are we currently fighting? Can’t we just fill her up locally?”

If It’s True

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

That the US military used “psy ops” on US Senators visiting Afghanistan, then:

1) Those directly involved should be relieved of command and court martialed immediately.

2) The Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of the Army, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Army Chief of Staff, and General David Petraeus should be fired immediately by the President of the United States.

It’s long past time that the US political leadership put the US military back under civilian control.

This sort of stuff is completely unacceptable, totally illegal, and borders on treason.

Less Than One Pentagon Year

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Russia’s total defense spending through 2020…

Once again, this begs the question: when we are spending 10 times as much as anyone else on defense, what exactly are we getting?

So far this decade:

1) Losing two pointless wars against “terror”

2) Not actually capturing any major terrorists

3) Not successfully predicting any major international events, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa

I Meant Nothing, I Lead To Nothing

Defense Secretary Gates discovers a brand new world!

A world wherein losing 2 wars and pretending to be strategically reflective is called out…

The Pyongyang Bang Theory

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Five years, five minutes: North Korea could hit Alaska!!!

Demonstrating:

1) We must continue with missile defense, although it has never worked.

2) We must cower in our beds over the possibility that a missile could be launched against us by yet another fifth-rate nation, followed quickly by the nuclear annihilation of said nation.

3) We must invent justifications for not seriously cutting the only government agency whose spending is out of control.

Gorilla says: “Phony threats and middle class jobs are all the Pentagon has to offer!”

How ‘Bout Some Real Pentagon Cuts?

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

These aren’t the usual nonsense announced by the Secretary of Defense, a whopping 2% a year, while the SoD continues to insist on overall spending at 1% above inflation, so in fact there’s no change at all, unless we get rid of:

1) Missile Defense: has never worked…

2) The Navy: other than Somali pirates and showing the flag in furren ports, what’s their mission these days? Are aircraft carriers good for anything other than homophobic, misogynistic humor?

3) The Air Force: who are we dogfighting in this or any other year?

The fact is that we spend 10 times more on defense than anyone else (sound familiar, health care reformers?), and we’re losing two pointless wars against lightly armed fifth-raters, while our leaders keep us feeling paranoid and insecure, and never bother to question what is currently the only jobs program on offer.

Gorilla says: “Fear and loathing are the Greek bonds of the Pentagon!”
