A Failure Departs

Monday, July 18th, 2011

General David Petraeus, off to the CIA, after another surging failure, this time in Afghanistan…

It’s hard to understand why a general with trillions at his disposal cannot defeat a very small, fifth-rate insurgency after 10 years of fighting.

The answers are clear: 1) not enough troops, 2) not enough focus on nation building by and for Afghans, 3) corruption on a massive scale, and 4) funding both sides in a civil war through the drug trade.

What’s more difficult to grasp is why such failures are allowed to continue in office, rather than kicked upstairs to run the not very effective intelligence agencies.

Failing For A Decade

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Well, the verdict on Afghanistan remains: we can’t win so long as Pakistan is backing the people we are fighting.

And it doesn’t help that there is no functioning central government, a roaring drug trade, and no effective Afghan fighting force waiting for us to hand things over.

It’s long past time to pull out and treat terrorism in the region for what it is: a minor problem that’s not a serious threat to anyone.

Sowing But Not Reaping

General Petraeus thinks Americans who burn the Koran are endangering US troops!!!

Koran burners have been made possible, of course, by the very political party to which General Petraeus belongs.

Back in 2003, those who thought invading Iraq was at least as stupid an idea as burning Korans were treated to years of being called traitors who endanger the troops!

So when does the General, still losing two wars despite “surges” and desperate for more troops, think it appropriate to denounce the leaders of a major political party for stoking up the fear, racism, and hatred that make Koran burning seem reasonable to a sizable number of angry and stupid Americans?

Gorilla answers: “Never! Know Nothing generals, like their civilian counterparts, don’t engage in truth telling!”

Same Old Same Old

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Why does it matter that Petraeus now commands in Afghanistan?

The short answer: it doesn’t matter at all.

He’s been McChrystal’s overseer at CENTCOM for months and their counter-insurgency strategy so far has totally failed.

Oh, and back in Iraq, scene of the great “surge success”, the sectarian killing still goes on, the government still hasn’t been formed, and everyone’s waiting around for the US to leave so they can resume their civil war.

What’s the strategy now?

Can’t be about building up Afghanistan, because the local army and police are totally incapable of taking over and Congress has decided to cut off infrastructure funding. So much for winning hearts and minds…

Can’t be about capturing terrorists, since they’re all in Pakistan blowing up whatever takes their fancy.

What’s interesting about Afghanistan is the same lack of connection to reality in Washington that guides US economic policy.

We must be seen to be doing something, but not too much, because we simply don’t have enough troops there to pacify the country and unemployed people in our country must suffer.

We hope nothing bad will happen before this year’s election, but if it does it will be even harder to both withdraw from Afghanistan and get more stimulus passed.

Surging Home Sales?

Monday, July 27th, 2009

As Floyd Norris and Calculated Risk point out, the reports of a “surge” in June new home sales neglect to mention that June sales were the worst since records have been kept (more than 45 years) and were 21% below the sales of June 2008 (not reported as a great month at the time).

Why is such economic news now presented in the rosiest, most inaccurate fashion?

On the other hand, Iraq and Afghanistan have disappeared from media radar screens, but when they do resurface there’s plenty of pessimism to go around.

Gorilla answers: “Moving forward is the new going backward. Get me Petraeus, we need a surge in cramdowns pronto!”
