In The Door?

Will Scotland replace Greece as the new EU nation?

Only a referendum will tell, but the SNP’s victory last night means Scots at last will decide whether to cut the cord with the rest of the UK.

Boycott Scotland? Send Them Flowers!

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Another vacation era story that just doesn’t make sense is the outrage over the decision by Scotland to allow a terminally ill, convicted terrorist to return to Libya to die.

Another round of Freedom whiskey anyone?

The insensible is why this should cause the slightest shred of controversy. Scotland has laws allowing clemency for dying murderers. In the US, we continue with capital punishment, keeping pace with barbarian dictatorships worldwide.

The deal with Libya (nearly 15 years ago!) was quite simple: in exchange for a large payment to the Lockerbie families, the provision of the guilty by Tripoli to international trial, and a promise by Libya not to use terrorism in future, the West would get access to Libya’s vast oil resources. Both sides have certainly lived up to this bargain.

Gorilla says: “Scotland reminds us that we are supposed to be human beings with the capacity for humanity. George W. Bush’s torturers and the Lockerbie bombing remind us of just how difficult that is!”

The Sacking Of The Green

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Over in Britain, it’s curtains for the wind turbine industry.

What’s illustrative here is the “green” problem: in a nutshell, alternative energies aren’t economically competitive with bad things like fossil fuels.

The simplest way to address the problem is a big tax on carbon consumption, to get the price of oil, gas, and coal into a neighborhood where wind, solar, and other alternatives are viable.

But that requires political courage, which isn’t found anywhere in the US at the moment. So we’re having yet another go round at cap and trade!

In Scotland, they’re spending 10 million pounds to save a wind turbine factory that employs 100 people.

That means each worker is being paid like they’re a family practice physician in the USA!

Gorilla thinks this makes sense: “We get the banks to offer health insurance and the doctors to work on wind farms, sooner or later we’ll have income inequality licked in this country!”.
