Next Time: Quality

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

An amazing sidelight of the last 10 years or so is the extent to which people who fail are asked to continue failing or to head up task forces on failure or insist on accountability by everyone other than the one who failed.

Toyota is taking this to new heights of absurdity with the announcement, in the midst of recalling millions of cars worldwide, that the company’s President will head up a Global Task Force On Quality.

Who Asked The Question?

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

The Japanese transport minister says the Toyota recalls won’t affect bilateral relations with the US.

A very curious statement, since no one so far on either side of the pond has suggested that bilateral relations might be affected.

One wonders if the Japanese have decided to market themselves as Americans used to see them: exporters of cars and other consumer goods, former foes turned good, or threats to the dying American auto industry. It’s always been a confusing national identity, not least to Americans…

Ending With A Clunk

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Reality for the auto industry is settling in for the long haul.

Cash for clunkers moved up sales a few months, but the overall picture is dire: a vast oversupply of cars and very few buyers.

When Toyota, which actually makes cars people want to buy, is cutting production by 10%, the odds of GM staying afloat remain dim.
