Not so long as the government can spike any story it wants to on national security grounds.
The problem with the Murdoch-sponsored hacking solution is that it doesn’t hold the offending parties accountable.
First, Murdoch should have lost all his UK broadcast licenses and been indicted for obstruction of justice.
Second, as was done, criminal prosecutions should have been lodged against the responsible editors and journalists.
Finally, heavy fines, on the order of billions, should have been levied against Newscorp.
The fact that these things mostly weren’t done shows that the British political class care much more about protecting the rich than promoting a free press.
